The Christmas Story….

She must have held Him tighter than a mother had ever known….  wrapped in her arms, staring down at Him through teary eyes… tears of joy… tears of excitement… of gratitude… and, yet… tears of knowledge… knowing full well that His walk would be difficult… painful…. tragic… sacrificial.

She was chosen… virtuous… we call her Blessed…. He was formed by the potter’s hands and handed to her, with the timeless promise of the coming King embedded in His heart of hearts…the unblemished Lamb of God.  The story had been told by generations before her… Regardless, she danced…. in spite of, she rejoiced… dug in her heels, tightened her grip…  looked up that Hill of tomorrow…. square in the face.. Her culture demanded answers… her faith… and His faithfulness.. supplied the courage….. She was reminded that He was the King… she, of all people, knew that His birth was a miracle…immaculate…. so she trusted..

Imagine the infinitely number of times she must have hidden her tears… trembled with fear, knowing the outcome of his life…. as she held His tiny fingers for first steps…. bathed Him in a nearby stream…. played silly games with a toddler….. flee their home for safety…. watched  Him feed  himself… make friends… work in Joe’s Furniture Shop…..  then set out to do His Father’s business….. She provided… was the “Head Start Program” to launch his worldly mission…

Tough job….. but Mary did the stuff of Mom’s.. Dad’s… everyday…  breakfast…. homework…. football practice..ballet practice… listening to 3rd graders read aloud..eat Happy Meals… sacrifice… sacrifice….sacrifice….  but how rewarding is it to stand beside a sleeping child and dream the dreams… make the promises… She did her job…..  and we still remember her for it…. Mother.  We forget that the trials of His incarnate steps must have reflected the foundation… the example… the discipline… direction… lessons of childhood… His strength in the desert… His self-control…. He must have experienced anger, sadness, defeat, joy, fun, victory….  Yes, He was Lord… but also fully man….  and no one becomes a man alone.

The Story… Christ’sMass…. celebrating life… hope… promise… a celebration of what comes tomorrow.  As parents… as Blessed parents, handed temporary gifts of perfection by the Potter Himself…. we are nothing but vessels to bring and encourage life… to be an anchor for a boat on a wind-tossed sea…. to supply a warm hug…. a shared tear…. the uncontrollable smile..the unconditional love…. laughter… the celebration of lives..  of birth… and of living….

From my family… Rod, Baker, Belle…. to  yours…… Merry, Merry ChristMass…

(Mom, Dad…..  Merry Christmas… and Thank You….  I am who I am because of you… )
